The death has occurred of the comedy actor and disability campaigner Lord Rix.

The 92-year-old, who had been terminally ill, was the president of the learning disability charity Mencap. As Brian Rix, he performed on stage and TV  in a series of post-war ‘Whitehall farce’ comedies, starring alongside the likes of Tommy Cooper and Sid James.

He was also one of the UK’s leading charity campaigners, beginning campaigning for people with learning disabilities after his eldest daughter was born in 1951 with Down’s syndrome.
