The death has occurred of former Israeli President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres.

The 93 year old died some two weeks after suffering a major stroke.

A former President & Prime Minister, he was the elder statesman of Israeli politics and was the last surviving link to the country’s founding fathers.

First elected to parliament in 1959, he later held every major cabinet post – including defence, finance and foreign affairs.

He held the office of prime minister for three brief stints.

It was his role in the first Israeli-Palestinian peace accord that earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 with prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
