The death has occurred of golfing legend, Arnold Palmer at the age of 87.

Viewed as one of the greatest and most influential player’s in the history of the game of golf, he was largely responsible for the explosion of interest in the game in the 1960s.

He had been admitted to hospital last Thursday for cardiovascular work but his condition deteriorated over the last number of days.

During his career he won seven major championships and more than 90 tournaments worldwide and was the first golf player to make $1m from playing the sport.
But he made much more than that from his many off-course endorsements, putting his name to a variety of products and services and this was ground-breaking for a sports star half a century ago. In the 1960′s he started Arnold Palmer Enterprises and it became a multi-divisional empire involving merchandise, automobiles and aviation. Another important commercial arm was his course design and management. He also was heavily involved in charity work.

Palmer continued to play in tournaments into his seventies.
