A non-league footballer in England has died after collapsing during a match on Monday.

Daniel Wilkinson collapsed and suffered a suspected heart attack during a League Cup game between his club Shaw Lane AFC and Brighthouse Town at the Brighouse Town’s St Giles Road stadium.

He was treated on the pitch before being taken to Halifax’s Calderdale Royal Hospital. However he later passed away.

Club Chairman Craig Woods made the sad announcement on the club’s Facebook page saying; “It’s with great sadness that we have to announce the tragic loss of Daniel Wilkinson who has sadly passed away after collapsing on the pitch during the game last night, our thoughts and prayers are with him family and friends at this time. The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages and thoughts that we have received throughout the night. There are no more words at this time.”
